Visually the exterior appearance is much more than acceptable and particularly internally,is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its near 70 year-old age and nature, i.e. a children's ephemeral book.It is only the minimal and minor faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite them, it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of major detracting faults expected to be found in a book of this age. Eugene Field Snr. b. (September 2nd,1850,St. Louis – d. November 4th,1895,Chicago) was an American writer, best known for his children's poetry and humorous essays. He was known as the "poet of childhood". Eugene Field's classic bedtime poem originally written 1889 - about three children's adventures sailing in a wooden shoe, and a poem about a sugar-plum tree,a chocolate cat and a gingerbread dog - is brought to life with Helen Page's vivid illustrations in this later edition. Helen Lamson Page was born in Charleston,West Virginia,on October 1st,1909. She graduated from Red Bank (New Jersey) High School in 1927 and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn,New York, in 1932. Helen Page's paper dolls are charming, the work of an artist with a delicate touch. She made her first paper dolls at age four, and her creative talent has allowed her to explore many artistic avenues besides her captivating and collectible paper dolls.
She has illustrated greeting cards and children's books for the Samuel Lowe Company and the Swann Company.Helen and her husband Gregory, whom she wed in 1933,created puppets and presented full length productions of Cinderella and Tinderbox.
During the 1960s,Helen expanded her artistic horizons even further by studying the Oriental style of painting known as sumi-e (simple strokes rendered swiftly with special ink on rice paper). The result? A one-woman show in St. Petersburg where she and her husband retired. There, Helen became immersed in the world of doll collecting and miniatures, focusing mostly on paper dolls. She had also created party favours, convention souvenirs and special paper doll commissions for collectors. Enjoying her later years in Florida, she continued to paint miniature paper dolls until late in 2006,when tremors in her hands made it impossible for her to work any more. She passed away on February 21st,2013 at the age of 103.
